The world has come to understand that the earth’s natural resources will not be around several generations from now should drastic preventative actions not be taken. With polar ice caps melting, oceans being polluted, and oil wells going dry, mankind is hard-pressed to find alternative ways of living in order to better utilize natural resources and keep earth sustainable for years to come. “Going green” can be an effective way to help the planet and increase sustainability. While recycling is the best way to help the environment, Hawaii housing is also shifting its energy uses in order to best preserve the fragile Hawaiian landscape.

Notable company Tori Richard is leading the way locally by installing a $1.1 million photovoltaic system that will supply the majority of its energy. It hopes that by leading by example, several homeowners will follow suit and do the same. The company’s project took place at its headquarters in Kalihi and will result in almost 300,000 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and almost 5,000 less barrels of oil consumed over the life of the system. The new solar panel system will work hand-in-hand with a number of other “going green” initiatives that includes CFL lighting instead of inefficient incandescent light bulbs, upgrading to a more efficient air conditioning system, renewing roof-top coatings to reflect heat, and installing motion sensors on office lights.

Planting seeds and watching them grow into flowers and vegetables is the cheapest and best way to grow a garden.

Seeds are far cheaper than potted plants and bedding and easier to get so you can create a much larger garden. Growing from seeds gives you a far greater variety of plants to choose from. Many fruits, vegetables and flowers are only available as seeds.

There are other benefits to growing from seed. Many gardeners believe that plants grown from seed are healthier and bigger than transplanted vegetation. You also have the fun of watching what you plant grow to full size when you use seeds. Planting seeds and watching them grow into plants can give your children an appreciation of nature.

The best way to ensure that your seeds grow into the vegetables and flowers you want is to first plant them into trays and mini pots. Fill the trays and mini pots with sterilized potting soil to protect the seedlings from fungus and disease. A fungicide like No-damp can also protect your seedlings. Plant the seeds four to eight weeks before the last frost if you plan to put them outside depending on the plant.
Put the seedlings in a sunny spot so they’ll grow and water well. Move the plants to larger pots when the seedlings are a few inches tall.

Start taking the seedlings outside for a few hours in the day to acclimate them to the outdoors. Don’t leave them out over night until your certain there won’t be a frost.
Get the soil ready for the seedlings by tilling it by hand or using a Roto tiller. Tilling early can cause weeds to come up fast so you can pull them out before planting.

Plant the seedlings in the garden once the risk of frost is gone. A transplanting fertilizer can make the process easier and the plants healthier. Once the seedlings are in the ground they’ll have to be watered and fertilized like any other plants.

A great way to save money is to plant perennials which will grow again next year saving you the trouble of replanting. Another penny pinching tip is to try harvesting seeds from your plants and planting them next year. If you do this dry the seeds, slowly and store them in a cool dry place in the winter. This may not work with hybrid and genetically engineered seeds which are designed to be used once. You can also save a few bucks by storing the seeds you used last year for use next season.

A little knowledge can go a long way when you’re trying to plant and maintain a lawn and garden that you can be proud of.

The most important thing for any plant is the soil that it grows in so learn as much as you can about the soil in your area. Talk to local gardening experts and ask them when and how much to water and what plants grow best in your local earth.

Choosing the right plants to grow in your garden and the right variety of grass for your lawn is vital. Do some research before you buy plants, turf, seed or grass seeds. Check the internet and read up on gardening and lawns so you’ll know what to do. Remember planting seeds or plants that will die is a waste of money and effort.

An excellent source of quality greenery and advice is a locally owned and operated greenhouse or garden center. Local growers will be more knowledgeable about conditions in your areas and more likely to have plants that will survive.

Regular work is needed to keep your yard looking great. Mow your lawn frequently so grass and leaves will be chopped up for fertilizer. Weed once week or more often, weeds are easier to pull out and get rid of when they’re small. Regular weeding also reduces the need for toxic and expensive herbicides.

Take advantage of as any many organic methods as you can. Organic gardening is healthier for you and your yard and it saves you money. It’s easy to make your own organic fertilizer: create a compost heap to convert your trash into fertilizer, use chopped grass and leaves to fertilize your lawn and use natural fertilizers such as animal manure if you have to buy fertilizer.

There are also cheaper, natural alternatives to chemical pesticides that can be dangerous to you and your family. Used dishwasher, garlic and hot pepper sprays are just a few of the affordable alternatives to chemical poisons available. The hose can be a cheap alternative to bug spray just use a stream of water to wash pests away. You can even put in some plants that repel insects from your garden.

Learn as much as you can about organic gardening before you start planting in the spring. Do research online or check books and magazines about organic gardening out from your public library. Read up on the kind of flowers and vegetables or grass you want to plant and gardening in your areas. Be on the look for money saving ideas that you can implement easily.

Cut your water bill and make your lawn and garden healthier by watering with common sense. If you water less but always make sure your watering is deep and heavy you can have stronger and healthier plants. Always water in the early morning or night because water you put on during the day will evaporate.

Your home could be costing you a lot of money if you don’t take the time and efforts needed to make it energy efficient.

Taking a few simple actions now can make your home energy efficient, save you money and help protect the environment. Going green doesn’t have to cost you a fortune and doesn’t require a lot of fancy new technologies.

One simple action that most of us can do is to eliminate as many of the gaps in a home’s construction as possible. These gaps cause air to escape from the house, including the war air you pay to heat in the winter and the cool air you pay to air condition in the summer. Closing off gaps around windows, doors and other places in your home can keep air and the money you spend on cooling and heating in.

Another way to keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter and reduce heating costs is insulation. Installing new insulation in an older home can save money, especially if the insulation is properly installed. Make sure insulation is free of crimps, gaps and tears so air can’t escape.

Replacing your windows can keep air from escaping and reduce heating and cooling costs. New windows take advantage of modern technologies such as double glazing and special coatings that make the glass act like insulation. Wood, vinyl and fiberglass window frames that don’t conduct heat can also help insulate your home.

Updating your heating and cooling system can save you money. Modern furnaces and air conditioners are more energy efficient and effective than older models. They burn less gas and use less electricity and can give you more control over your home. Many new air conditioners let you cool just one room in your home at a time, for example. Doing a little research on heating and cooling systems can save you a fortune in the future. New automated thermostats let you program your furnace or air conditioner to reduce or increase the temperature when you’re not at home.

One of the cheapest and easier ways to make your home more energy efficient is to do a little landscaping. Trees can make your home cooler by providing shade in the summer and warmer in the winter by repelling cold winds, so plant a few.

You can keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter without increasing your utility bills by increasing the energy efficiency of your home.

There are tremendous impacts and benefits that can persuade many people why it is a good choice to make the switch to green cleaning products. These impacts and benefits have to do with the environment and our personal health. Healthy cleaning products are changing the way that our cleaning habits affect everything around us in a good way!

One of the greatest impacts caused by switching to green cleaning products is that the amount of household waste generated in your home will be greatly reduced. Instead of sending toxins and harsh chemicals into your local environment on a daily basis, you will now be less of a toxic waste bug. Another great thing is that instead of creating further problems to the environment that are hard to clean up, the use of green cleaning products avoids the problem in the first place. The environment needs all the help that it can get and every little step counts.

Switching to green cleaning products will make manufacturers take notice when other companies get revenue from their green cleaning products. When enough people switch to using healthy cleaning products, manufacturers will recognize the desire and will respond by producing less and non toxic cleaning formulas. As more people switch and become environmentally conscious, other people will have a greater chance to learn how their daily actions affect the environment and their own health. Another impact will be that manufacturers will work harder on innovative ingredient development and create better green cleaning formulas as a result. As more innovations result, we will see more recycling, biodegradable formulas and a greater variety of natural ingredients being used in ingenious ways.

Besides, less harmful pollution in the environment, a great benefit relates to human health. People who use green cleaning products are no longer exposed to the health risks from using toxic cleaners. When a person is exposed to a toxic cleaner, there can be either short or long term risks. The short term risks can involve an immediate reaction such as a rash, watery eyes, itching, burns, blindness, irritate mucus membranes and respiratory problems. Long term risks are health related problems that can arise from chronic use or over-exposure to the toxin and can be related to many serious illness affecting the respiratory system, endocrine system, hormone levels and the nervous systems. As food for thought, many toxic cleaners contain carcinogens, which can cause cancer.

Sustainability is another benefit to using healthy cleaning products. Sustainable products are those products, which do not use a non-renewable resource in their manufacture. Instead, recycled materials and other alternative ingredients are used which will not affect the ability of future generations to enjoy the protected natural resource that would have been used to extinction otherwise.

Making the switch to green cleaning products has positive impacts and benefits that can be appreciated by all. These impacts and benefits can improve the quality of our lives and the environment. This environmental solution of going green should be taken seriously. Switching to green cleaning now provides protection against environmental and human health problems later.

When you switch to green cleaning, there are easy steps to a greener home that will make the transition simple. You can make a gradual switch that will help you to avoid creating a pile of toxic waste from the stash of toxic cleaners that you already have in your home. There are three main steps to take when you switch to green cleaning.

The first of the steps to a greener home is to use up or get rid of the harsh cleaners and other toxic household solutions that you have in your home. Most municipalities have guidelines on how to get rid of household toxins safely and may even have an annual toxins drop off day for receiving household toxins. Your municipality will offer a guide to the safe disposal of household toxins.

The best thing to do is to gradually use up what you have, give it away or in some cases, let it dry up before disposal. This way, you can avoid adding to the liquid toxic soup that is already present in the local toxic dump. Do not just pour it down the drain and never use or pour a toxic chemical onto land. It will seep into the underground water system. When you know which chemicals that your municipality takes, you can box the remaining cleaners and store the box safely until the next drop off day.

The second step is about replacing your harsh formulas with mild and environmentally friendly cleaning products. As you use up the toxic cleaners that are present in your home, you can replace the toxic cleaners with non toxic formulas that you have purchased or made yourself. You can buy non toxic cleaners that have different qualities such as biodegradable, natural, recycled and sustainable.

If you choose to make your own cleaners, write the ingredients and the date that the formula was made on the label. Use tight fitting lids for the containers in which you put your formulas. You will make the process even greener when you use recycled containers or sturdy containers for your formulas.

The final step involves changing your attitude as a consumer. The next time that you are at the store for a household solution, choose only those products which are environmentally friendly. Avoid buying toxic formulas or if you must buy some, choose the smallest quantity. Most of us have such large quantities of poisons in our home, when we really only use such a small bit at a time. When you always choose the most environmentally friendly option, you know that you are making the most green choice possible at the time.

Great green innovations are always just around the corner now as more people begin to notice how much their own actions affect the health of the planet and all its inhabitants and want to make the switch to a greener lifestyle. When you take these easy steps to a greener home, you will feel more confident that your housecleaning methods are good for you, your family and the environment.
