One of the best ways to make your home a healthier place to live is to use a warm mist humidifier to increase the moisture in the air.

Dry air can cause sinus problems including allergies, coughing, a runny nose, nosebleeds and make sinus infections, flu and colds worse. Dry air can also affect your looks by making your skin dry and your hair brittle.

Your health isn’t the only thing that dry air can hurt, a lack of moisture can cause wood to crack and warp. This can hurt your hardwood floors and wood furniture. Dryness can also cause wallpaper to peel and hurt houseplants that require moist air to live.

Most people will only have to humidify their homes in the winter when forced air heating dries out the air. People who live in dry climates such as the Southwest will have to humidify all year round.

Warm mist humidifiers offer many of the advantages of vaporizers without the safety risks. A vaporizer creates a hot blast of steam that can hurt pets and children. A warm mist humidifier heats the water and cools it before it’s released into the air for safeties.

Since they heat the water, these humidifiers reduce the chance that germs and mold will be reduced into the air. Like vaporizers, warm mist humidifiers can be used to release medicine into the air.

There is a risk that warm mist humidifiers can release mold that can cause allergies and breathing problems into the air. The risk of mold can be reduced or eliminated by regularly cleaning and properly maintaining the devices.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions from the owner’s manual when cleaning your humidifier will make it last longer and prevent future problems. Completely empty the humidifier, rinse it out and dry it with a towel whenever you add water to prevent mold. Cleaning the humidifier with disinfectant every few months will also make it safer. The heating element should also be cleaned at this time to prevent dirt build up.

If your humidifier has a filter it will have to be changed on a regular basis to eliminate mold build up. Most people can change the filter once year but it may have to be changed more often if you humidify year round. Hard water can clog the filter with minerals from the tap but using distilled water in the humidifier can help it last longer.

One warm mist humidifier should keep your home moist if you just need it to compensate for winter heating. People who live in dryer climates should consider a whole house humidifier; this is a larger device that’s attached to a central heating or conditioning system.

Of course everyone loves to shop, but with all of the resources consumed by both the producers and the customers, shopping can be a practice that takes a heavy toll on the environment. There are many indirect ways shopping negatively affects the environment, such as the fuel required to ship products around the world and materials used in both packaging and shopping bags, nonetheless the materials used to make the products themselves. However, with some simple shopping tips, you can be proud to know that you can still shop and go green at the same time.

Although this change to your shopping habits may seem insignificant, using your own reusable or non-plastic bags will greatly reduce the amount of plastic put into landfills each year. Now, many stores sell reusable shopping bags so they don’t need to give you another plastic or paper bag next time you shop at that store. Furthermore, many stores offer slight discounts on purchases when the customer provides their own bag. Another tip is to try to buy in bulk. You don’t need to buy a year-long supply of something such as bread at one time and freeze it, but by buying slightly larger sizes than you normally do will reduce the amount of packaging that will be thrown in landfills because you will be buying those products less often. Also, if you purchase purified water, it is more environmentally friendly to buy it in large plastic jugs than bottles. If you need water on the go, buy reusable water bottles. And of course, opt for recycled products and organic foods. Products that are made from renewable materials are much more environmentally friendly.

Reduce indoor air pollution when you choose environmentally safe cleaning products. You can prevent and reduce poor air quality in your home the more that you use environmentally safe cleaning products. Did you know that indoor air pollution can be caused by the use, especially chronic use, of toxic cleaners and solutions in the home? There are such a large variety of strong chemicals contained in many brand name household cleaners and if enough of these chemicals are used regularly, the home can have poor air quality as a result.

Older homes with poor ventilation have an advantage in this respect over new, airtight homes. Poor ventilation allows the home to leak out the air contaminants while such indoor air pollution accumulates in more airtight homes. In such an airtight home, the pollution in the home can be up and over 80 times worse than what is outside.

If you must use a toxic solution in your home, only do so with enough ventilation, Open the windows and the doors, depending on where you have to use the product. If you do use toxic formulas in your household regularly, ventilate your home regularly, especially if your home is very airtight.

Many of the ingredients that are in toxic cleaners are so noxious that these ingredients can cause a multitude of human health problems. Household toxins can cause different symptoms and illness, depending on the degree of the exposure to the chemical. Symptoms can range from such symptoms as a rash, burn, water eyes and temporary respiratory discomfort. If someone were to continually breathe the chemicals in, they risk potential illness or even death. Some chemicals are so strong that the fumes can escape through the lid of its container. The best thing is to avoid having these chemicals in the home at all and choose healthy cleaning products instead.

There is a bit of a difference between green cleaning products and natural cleaning products. Green cleaning products covers a wider spectrum of products. A green cleaning product suggests a wider range of formula attributes that range from natural, biodegradable, sustainable, recycled and innovative. A green product may have one or more of these attributes. Both types of products will not have toxic chemicals in their formula.

A natural cleaning product is made from natural ingredients that may be in an unprocessed form such as oil, beeswax, natural soap or an herbal extract. Sometimes natural ingredients are processed to extract certain qualities that can be used to create cleaners. For instance, some plants will create a sudsing action and the sudsing element may be extracted to give a new formula suds.

When you use environmentally safe cleaning products, you do not have to worry that you are contaminating the air space within your home. Environmentally safe cleaning products are created without the toxins that are contained in many name brand house cleaners. Your home will be much safer when you choose green cleaning products for your household chores.

If you are concerned about the safety of many household cleaning products, you may want to switch to non toxic household cleaners instead. When you consider that most household cleaning products carry a warning symbol on the label, you should wonder if you really want to spray the product around your home. The common warnings that are
placed on household cleaners include symbols for poison, corrosive, explosive and flammable.

The very presence of these household toxins in the home can be a danger to adults, children and pets. Many of these products can emit fumes even if they are tightly capped. Since in most households, the task of cleaning is generally done by only one person or a few people, those people risk chronic exposure to the toxic chemicals contained in harsh cleaners. Some chemicals do not get digested or leave the body, instead, these chemicals can lay dormant in body fat and organs such as the brain. With enough exposure and accumulation, these chemicals can wreak havoc on a person’s health. Since children and pets are closer to the floor, where household pollution and chemical residue will fall, these ones are the most susceptible to chronic exposure and irritation from the chemicals.

According to the U.S. Poison Control Centers, of all the toxic exposures that occur, 10% are related to strong household cleaners. Household cleaners can cause breathing obstruction, blindness, teary eyes, burns, rashes and skin irritations. Some toxic cleaner labels carry specify instructions for safe use of the cleaner including the wearing of protective equipment such as gloves and safety goggles. Sometimes, if a person does not know about the potential harm, a person may mix cleaners and the combination may release deadly fumes or an explosion.

Many of the chemicals used in toxic household cleaners are known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, hormone mimickers and can even depress the nervous system. There are so many chemicals being used in household cleaning products and most of these harsh chemicals have not been tested for safety for humans. Thousands of these chemicals are being created all the time and these chemicals are typically placed in many household cleaning products as a way to use the chemicals up. People are spraying these manufacturing by-products in their home, without considering the warning symbol on the label.

Fortunately, there are a wide variety of non toxic cleaners that are just as effective as the toxic cleaners and are even better, because these natural home cleaning products do not rely on dangerous chemicals to clean the home. Many of these products have made use of old fashioned ingredients that were used before the advent of petro-chemical manufacturing. Other ingredients are newly developed using natural products as derivative ingredient.

Natural household cleaning products are meant to leave the home in a safe condition that will not affect the health of its inhabitants in a negative way. For the households with children and pets, this is a very important consideration. Natural home cleaning products are able to clean the home effectively without leaving behind any toxic residue or household pollution.

At one time, biodegradable cleaning products were an unknown thing. That is until the 1960s, when the word “biodegradable” was coined to indicate that when a product reached the environment as waste or pollution, it would degrade. The degrading would take place because, generally, bacteria or the elements would break the item down.

Before the wonders of the industrial age, there was a time when household cleaners were created from natural ingredients. When these ingredients reached the environment, they would break down safely because of their natural origin. These natural cleaning products were not harmful to the home, health or environment.

People did not know it then, but their cleaning methods are now inspiring many green cleaners even today because there were no plastics, synthetic materials or harsh chemicals used regularly in the home at that time. It was only when petroleum based products began to be processed that these harsh cleaners began to be used everywhere. This is because as a petroleum by-product, these ingredients were cheap and plentiful. These cheap ingredients became the active ingredients for many cleaning formulas. Many of the ingredients used in modern cleaning products are by-products of different manufacturing processes unrelated to household cleaning and their safety has not been tested for regular use by humans.

These petroleum based and synthetic chemical based cleaning products eventually became widely used without little consideration for their effects on health or the environment. Most of the ingredients in these modern formulas are not only toxic or harsh, the ingredients are also persistent pollutants in the environment. This means that these ingredients do not break down and instead may accumulate in water and the earth. Persistent pollutants wreak havoc with the environment, habitat and wildlife.

When biodegradable cleaning products first came out, the first popular product was biodegradable laundry detergent. This is because it was discovered that only a little bit of the regular detergents was needed to cause a fish kill. Nowadays, as more people understand how important it is to save the environment, there are more types of biodegradable cleaning products available. These biodegradable cleaning products borrow their recipes from older cleaning formulas and use newly developed ingredients that are meant to be environmentally friendly.

Earth friendly products are available in a variety of forms for common everyday uses. Interested customers will find biodegradable detergents, steamer cleaners, stain treatments, solvent cleaners, bleach alternatives, fabric softeners, dish soaps and general cleaners for all types of surfaces. Not only are many of these products created from biodegradable ingredients, many of these products are also green cleaners, which gives the customer the comfort of knowing that the environmentally friendly biodegradable cleaner is mild and effective enough to be used in the home regularly.

Biodegradable cleaning products are a necessity for keeping the environment and water clean of the persistent pollutants that harm wildlife and their habitat. When it comes to safe water, the water with the least chemicals is going to be the safest for everybody including wildlife. Since we ultimately drink from the water sources around us, shouldn’t we do our best to keep our waterways safe by using biodegradable cleaning products?

As more parents become environmentally conscious and aware of the many toxic ingredients that can be found in many products, green baby products are looking more attractive than ever. As more evidence comes out about lead on children’s toys, plastic bottles and the toxic ingredients contained in many products, parents want better products for their children, including green baby products. Whether it is organic cotton for their children’s t-shirts or a vegetable based baby cream, parents are becoming more interested in protecting their children from the bombardment of harsh chemicals that are routinely used in many homes.

For many parents, the switch is not entirely about saving the planet. The switch to a green lifestyle is chosen because it is simply a more healthy way to bring up children. Parents naturally want the best for their children and that is enough to motivate many parents to go green. These parents realize that the healthiest start is possible when exposure to toxins and plastics is kept to a minimum.

For some parents, the switch to a green lifestyle can begin with pregnancy. At that point, the mother-to-be will begin greening her home and lifestyle in preparation for the baby’s arrival. This greening process generally involves using natural cleaners and personal products and it can involve the preparation of the nursery. Parents can choose natural carpets without synthetic fibers, organic wood products and natural paints for the nursery.

Many parents want to avoid exposing their children to plastic and will purchase glass baby bottles and ceramic dish ware for their youngsters. Since many children place their toys in their mouth beginning in babyhood, parents can choose from wooden toys and other toys made of natural materials, such as rubber and cloth, for their babies and children.

For clothing and diapers, there are many green fabrics, including hemp, cotton, wool, linen, bamboo, soy and silk for starters. You can find eco clothing for babies and children of all ages for the different seasons. Many parents believe that recycling clothing is another way to make sure their children’s clothing is green.
